Alan’s live blogging notes from Lotusphere 2011
Theme: Get Social. Do Business.
Thank you to our customer GM for bringing a Chevy Volt.
500 University students have been brought here by Group Business Solutions (GBS)
Guest presenter: Kevin Spacey - talk about how being able to connect to people, and give young performers a chance is so important. How he used the internet "before social networking" to crowd-source discovering new scripts, new talent, etc. His mentor, Jack Lemon taught him to "send the elevator back down" as there is always talent waiting to be discovered.
Why he (Trigger Street Productions) was so interested in creating the movie The Social Network. It had Shakespearian themes of friendship, betrayal, power and money. How creating the greatest social network ironically ruined a friendship.
"Think about your own lives. Ask yourself what is your vision for yourself, your company and the world. What is your responsibility to make that vision come to life. How do you work together with others to make it happen?"
GM Alistair Rennie. We're on the verge of an opportunity, a transformation of the way people and technology interact. The "social shift." Our measurements need to be "Your Success".
Shifts of this magnitude are rare. 1) Mainframe. 2) Departmental IT. 3) PCs. 4) Internet. 5) Social
A Social Business is: Engaged (and had deep analytics). Transparent (anyone can be engaged) Nimble. (assemble and respond at incredible speed to change). Cited a McKinsey study about successful businesses using social technology.
Social businesses are built using open standards: HTML5, activity streams, etc.
Analytics, Compliance, Governance, Security... PLUS Elegance, Simplicity.
For IBM's 100th birthday, they are focused on how do we create a Smarter Planet. All of the solutions require people. To be part of a smarter planet, you need to be a social business.
Jim Basillie (co-CEO)of RIM on stage with a RIM Playbook. He's slamming iPad by talking about it's multi-tasking and flash support. He's showing Lotus email then switching over to Lotus Connections running on Playbook. (via video, not live demo... lame) Annouces a special program for Lotus developers to win a playbook, get promoted on RIM App Store, press releases at Blackberry World.
Jeff Schick (VP of Social____) takes stage for a customer panel with execs from BASF (largest chemical company in the world), KBC, CSC and AT&T. BORING. People around me are really annoyed. Everyone wants demos. Get to the cool stuff.
Sandy Carter, VP Worldwide Sales for Collaboration Solutions. I'm an evangelist. Talking about how IBM executives all use social tools.
Talk about HR, Marketing, and Product Design
1. How processes, such as new hire use multi-player games to get people engaged.
2. IBM was the first company to create social media guidelines. (2005, then updated in 2008)
Social media aggregator: http://www-949.ibm.com/social/lotusphere/
3. Product design is done by online "jams"
Larry Bowden, talking about Exception Web Experiences.

IBM playing to their strengths, features come from pieces all across the IBM portfolio. Lots of mention of Rational, Cognos, etc. Good for huge customers, but scary for anyone else.

Demo of building customer facing web sites with drag and drop. Change page layout, embed widgets, etc. No programming, so Marketing can design customer facing web sites.
