As with most Windows applications, in Lotus
Notes when you press the ALT key, the menus at the top of the screen become
accessible via pushing another key on your keyboard. The key to push
is shown underlined in the menu, and these keys are called "accelerators".
For example in the screen shot below, by pressing ALT+F would open
the File menu, ALT+E the Edit menu, ALT+V the View menu, etc.

Accelerator keys are also found in the sub-menus. For example, ALT then F then D then O would perform "Open".
Lotus Notes takes the idea of "Accelerator Keys" a step further by applying the same concept to Lotus Notes specific screen items such as Action Buttons and Bookmarks. Lotus Notes calls these "Extended Accelerators". To enable them go to File - User Preferences - Basics, and in the Additional Options section, select "Show extended accelerators".

With "extended accelerators" enabled, when you press the ALT key, you will see indicators displayed telling you which key to press to perform a Notes action. For example, the screen shot below shows that when using your mail, if you press ALT then 1, it is the same as clicking on the "New Menu" action button. ALT then 2 is the same as clicking Reply. ALT then 3 is Reply To All, etc. If you want to access extended accelerators for the Lotus Notes bookmark bar (the left side of the screen) press ALT then B.

After you press ATL + B, Notes will display the key for you to press in order to access the associated Bookmark. For example ALT then B then 4 will open your calendar.
Now of course extended accelerator keys are not specific to mail, they work on all Notes applications. For example, in a TeamRoom ALT then 1 will create a new document.

After pressing these keyboard combinations a few times, you'll find they become second nature. For example, when you're reading an email and want to respond, just press ALT + 2!
