Today is the 30th anniversary of the introduction of VisiCalc, the original spreadsheet program created by Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston.
Today also marks general availability of SocialCalc, the social spreadsheet from Socialtext.
Some of the key features include:
- Sheets can contain values from other sheets, even across workspaces. This allows you to distribute the creation and sharing of data.
- Seamlessly integrate wiki pages (or people's profiles) inside spreadsheets
- Include values from spreadsheets (entire thing, ranges, or individual cells) in wiki pages
Imagine no longer having to email around spreadsheets as attachments, and suffer the huge thread of jumbled responses.
Imagine no longer wondering if you are looking at the most current version, unsure if someone else has already updated the numbers elsewhere.
Imagine no longer having to merge together multiple files from different people.
You can do all of this easily with SocialCalc. Try it with your team today.

No comments at all? Not even about the video? <sniff sniff>
Loved your vlog. Very neat clean and elegant. I have a question considering SocialCalc. I was thinking about using SocialCalc for my company and then started playing around with Google Wave. Why would I want to use your product over Wave?
Thanks in advance. :-)
Hi Leonard. Socialtext and Google Wave are not competitors. If Wave moves beyond the protype stage and cutomers are interested in it, developers will be able to easily integrate Waves into things like Socialtext wiki pages.
- Socialtext is available today, Wave is a potential future product that is currently being prototyped via public testing.
- Socialtext is easy to use, Wave's UI has been met with VERY mixed reactions, it's up to you to judge for yourself.
- Socialtext is a combination of Dashboards, wikis, blogs, spreadsheets, microblogging, profiles, etc. Wave is not a true wiki, it is an attempt at a new metaphor that mixes email, wiki, IM, etc together. That may or may not be appealing to customers, especially given the amount of training it will require.
- Socialtext provides the option for you to have a dedicated appliance, or even an appliance behind your own firewall.
- Socialtext has a wonderful Desktop client
- Confusion over Google product roadmap. Wave? Google Apps? Google Sites?
I'd be happy to setup a demo for you anytime.
