The Lotus Notes 8 Sidebar has three "states"; Open, Thin, and Closed.
Typically you would open the Sidebar to use one of the applications contained there. For example, instant messaging someone via Sametime, accessing your shared files via Quickr, or looking at your calendar in "Day-At-A-Glance".
Here is the Sidebar opened showing Lotus Sametime.
When you are not in using one of the Sidebar appliactions, you can either make the Sidebar thin, or close it completely.
Here is the Sidebar displayed thin. An icon for each application is displayed.
The following animations shows how to change back and forth between the various states of the Sidebar.
1. When the Sidebar is open, if you click on the triangle pointing to the right, the Sidebar will resize from open to thin.
2. When the Sidebar is thin, if you click on the triangle pointing to the right, the Sidebar will resize from thin to closed.
3. When the Sidebar is closed, click on the triangle pointing to the left, the Sidebar will resize from closed to open.
4. When the Sidebar is thin, if you click anywhere on Sidebar it will open. If you click on a specific application's icon, it will open with that application showing.
5. Instead of having to click the arrow twice to go first from open to thin, then from thin to closed, you can choose "Close" from any Sidebar application's menu. (It does not have to be the menu of the application that is currently showing).
