Sort Results By

When searching for documents in Notes database, you can control the way the results are displayed, by changing the value in the "Sort Results By" drop down list.

If you choose "relevance" documents are displayed based on how closely they match what you are looking for.  The bar along the left side is darkest at the top and fades as it gets lower, visually indicating how relevant the documents are.  This is similar to Google search.  Well not technically because this has nothing to do with links, but anyway...

If you choose "last modified", then your results are returned to you with the newest documents at the top.  So while the first (top) document is the newest, it may not be the closest match to what you are looking for.   I often use this style.

One of the most common questions I get asked about searching is "Why can't I sort the results?"  Well, you can.  If you select "keep current order (sortable)" than the results which are returned can be sorted by clicking on any sortable column title.

If you've never used these options before. I suggest you open up your mail file, or any other Notes database, and try them out.

I wish Google gave me these options! ;-)

@alanlepo: if you have time, you might wanna show how this can also be done on the web, with parameters fed to the search URL... including the option to keep results in the original order of the view being searched. Google can't do that because it has no idea about the way the original Notes view was arranged, it don't know nuthin' 'bout no views...
