What makes you special?

IBM is beginning a new marketing campaign with the theme of "What makes you special?".

I've been reading the material, and watching the upcoming television commercials, and I have to say I'm hooked.  I really like that the focus is on you, our customers.   Wait until you see the "anthem" commercial, you won't be able to stop humming "cause I'm not like everybody else"!

The campaign is tied into the theme of "Innovation" that Ed mentioned in his blog.  Please take a look at the information that is presented, especially the "Expanding the Innovation Horizon" study that IBM Business Consulting Services produced.   It highlights the important roll collaboration plays in enabling companies to innovate, which results in increased revenue.  This is obviously an area where IBM and Lotus can enable companies like no one else can.  Lotus has been a leader in collaboration for over a decade, and is marching strongly into the future with Notes/Domino, Sametime, Workplace, and the rest of our product/solution portfolio.

Please let me know what you think, is this campaign "on message" to what you are discussing within your own companies?

for whatever twisted reason in my head, the asterisk makes me think of Cingular, not IBM. Especially on the linked page where it is orange.

It's almost creepy to me that IBM is starting a new campaign with the theme of innovation. It's been less than a week since I sent Ed a set of little scripts as a concept demo for a theme that would fit right in with this: Innovation Beats Marketing.

What a cool convergence. Way to go, IBM.

Ever since reading this, I've been keeping an eye out for the latest ads. I finally saw the television commercial yesterday and it is FABULOUS! Love that they decided to use a song by the Kinks...

I'm glad you liked it. I saw the TV commerical this weekend while watching the NCAA tournament with some friends. They are not all the "IBM target audience" yet everyone in the room payed attention when it came on. Ok, some of the girls there who don't work in IT just thought the blue flowers were pretty, but at least it got their attention!

That's too funny. Aside from the "pretty flowers" and excellent song choice - the commercial does grab your attention. I guess that's all that matters...right?

Anybody know the name of the Kinks song that they use in the commercial?

Original ideas are a rarity these days, but when an ad espouses individuality it invites higher scrutiny.

Take a look at Helios Design Labs motion piece ■Bhopal Follies■ available here:

The spot was available on the Resfest and Tekko 2004 DVDs and centers around factories spewing flowers. ■I■m Not Like Everybody Else■ never rang so hollow.

Jeff, very cool video. Thank you for posting that. I think the "flower factory" idea has been around for a long time. It represents the epitome of contrast... an big ugly polluted industrial machine, pumping out beautiful flowers.
